Wang continues stellar play across multiple tours

BEIJING—In both of his Ping An Bank China Tour – PGA TOUR China Series’ appearances this year, South Korea’s J.H. Wang has finished as a runner-up—both times to Josh Geary. Last week playing on the OneAsia Tour, he added another second-place performance, and this time Geary was nowhere to be found. Wang fired rounds of 69-70-64-67 to finish three strokes behind countryman KT Kim at Siam Country Club’s Pattaya Plantation Course.

While the 19-year-old South Korean has yet to win this season, he has slowly been climbing in the Official World Golf Ranking. With his finish in Thailand, Wang moved to 163rd in the Ranking, his highest position in his young career.

When the year began, Wang was the 268th-ranked player in the world and the 13th-highest-positioned South Korean. Since January, he has improved 105 places and is the sixth-ranked South Korean, behind only Byeong Hun An (50th), Sangmoon Bae (88th), Seung-Yul Noh (121st), K.J. Choi (148th) and Inhoi Hur (159th).

Wang will always hold a significant place in Ping An Bank China Tour – PGA TOUR China Series’ history because he won the circuit’s inaugural event—the Mission Hills Haikou Open. He did that in record-setting fashion, capturing the title by 10 strokes, a record that still stands today.  In eight career Series’ starts, Wang has that lone victory, four other top-10s and he has never missed a cut. This season, he is second on the PGA TOUR China Order of Merit, with ¥259,200 in earnings. In addition, he is fourth on the OneAsia Tour Order of Merit (three starts) and 18th on the Asian Tour Order of Merit (four starts). Wang returns to action this week when he returns to the Asian Tour for the Queen’s Cup, which begins June 18 in Thailand.
